Summary:
Since the 90s, young Millennials, Gen Z, and Generation Alpha have faced an unprecedented surge in severe mental illnesses, suicide, substance abuse, pornography, intensity-based sex, anorexia, and obesity. In this workshop, participants will consider the following factors that were happening during this same period, such as the increasing absolutism of the biomedical paradigm and the expansion of the DSM; the proliferation of psychotropic medications; the explosion of the smartphone; the discontinuation of church attendance by 40 million Americans; and the permanent abandonment of Christianity by 50% of children raised in Christian churches and homes. This presentation focuses on how psychologists, licensed mental health professionals, and ministry leaders can turn the tide by shifting the paradigm to one that sees these human struggles through the lens of disconnection, trauma, resiliency, attachment, and faith. Participants will explore the topics of post-traumatic growth, the rupture and repair process, with specific attention to the Masterpiece Effect. Furthermore, participants will be able to describe aspects of unhealed trauma utilizing Polyvagal Theory. Lastly, participants will also learn about the enticement power factor that can be seen in the development of substance use and other behavioral addictions.
