Summary:
Building resiliency and mental toughness in today’s generation is crucial, given the pressures young people face in an increasingly complex world. Sport and performance psychology play a key role in fostering these qualities. Research highlights that mental toughness—defined as the ability to maintain focus, resilience, and self-belief in the face of adversity—can be developed through targeted psychological techniques (Gucciardi et al., 2015). In this workshop, psychologists, licensed mental health professionals, and ministry leaders will explore cognitive-behavioral strategies, mindfulness practices, and goal setting, commonly used tools to develop resiliency and mental toughness (Neenan, 2020). Participants will explore how sports environments provide an ideal context for mental toughness development, as athletes regularly encounter challenges that require psychological fortitude (Jones et al., 2007). Programs aimed at enhancing mental resilience help clients cope with stress, improve performance under pressure, and build self-confidence (Gould & Udry, 1994). As such, integrating sports psychology principles into educational and extracurricular activities can support youth in navigating contemporary challenges while developing essential life skills.
